The following County-led programs are designed to support our area employers in improving worker productivity, employee retention and work-life balance, while encouraging employees to live, work and play in DeKalb:

WorkSource DeKalb – The mission of WorkSource DeKalb (WSD) is to provide workforce investment activities through statewide and local investment systems that increase employment, retention and earnings of participants. The goal is to increase occupational skill attainment by participants, improve the quality of the workforce, reduce welfare dependency, and enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the nation. WSD administers various employment/training programs for adults, dislocated workers and youth ages 14-24. WSD aligns partnerships with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and Decide DeKalb, studying projections and work-related trends, promoting lifelong learning for high-demand occupations and building recruitment.

Quick Start – DeKalb has the No. 1 workforce training program in the countryQuick Start. Quick Start helps companies assess, select and train the right people at the right time for success. Services are free of charge as a discretionary incentive for job creation.

WSD’s Business Relations Unit works with employers to understand their human capital needs. The unit then combines the appropriate resources and expertise to develop a skilled, qualified labor force. The BRU also collaborates with employers and partner agencies to develop a job-matching process.

WSD currently emphasizes these two major programs:

DeKalb County’s Learn & Earn On-the-Job Training Initiative

This program provides employers with a subsidy/reimbursement of up to 50 percent of the OJT employee’s wages. The subsidy covers the training costs for up to 90 days. Employers must agree to:

  • Hire eligible individuals
  • Provide them with skills training for a specific time period
  • Pay wages at the same rates as similarly situated employees’ wages

OJT minimizes upfront training and supervision costs for new employees and ensures that training meets the job’s actual skill requirements. Employers also realize immediate gains in productivity as workers learn on the job. Workers benefit from employment and the immediate gain of income they receive during the training process.

Incumbent Worker Training

IWT provides funding to train existing, full-time employees. This helps businesses to effectively retain employees and stay competitive, averting layoffs and possible business closings. Businesses may use public or private training providers, or approved in-house training providers, based on the type of training. Consequently, businesses gain a more skilled workforce, increase efficiency and pay higher wages for existing personnel.

Workforce Housing – Our county boasts of a strong, young, well-educated talent pool. Advocating for quality housing for them and all DeKalb citizens, Decide DeKalb offers the DeKalb Workforce Housing program. This opportunity appeals to employers to increase productivity, employee retention and enhance the work-life balance.

GPTC - Continuing Education Opportunities

The following Film & Movie Industry training programs are solely GPTC's and are not affiliated with Decide DeKalb.

The film industry in Georgia is booming – currently ranked third in the nation and fifth in the world for number of productions (behind only Hollywood and New York). Industry growth over the next 3-5 years is projected to generate 3,000 - 5,000 new jobs in Georgia, most of which are on the set. The average earnings in these jobs are $84,000 per year.

However, getting into the industry is not easy. On-set film workers need a very specific set of skills attained by working on industry-standard equipment as well as experience on professional productions.
